Through The Lens Thursday #27: Mess

Through The Lens Thursday is a one-year photography project, where every week, my project partner, Greta of GFunkified and I, will post a picture (or pictures) we have taken based on a prompt. Our hope is that together, we can teach and learn from each other, stay accountable to our goal of improving our skills, and hopefully, be taking some gorgeous photographs.

A photography project

This week’s prompt is ‘Mess’.

EASY PEASY. I have dozens of pictures of messes. These are just recent ones, because I love the light coming in through our windows.

Mess - Boys and mess

Mess - Children and Zingo

The pre-motherhood me would FLIP. OUT. over this mess – “There’s shit everywhere! Oh my God, the rug is not straight! The Zingo tiles should be INSIDE the dispenser thingy! I need to clean it up now!”

Me now: The boys are quietly playing. Yay!

Motherhood: When Standards Drop.

(What do you think of these ‘mess’ photos? This is a photography exercise, so any critique is appreciated and welcomed!)

Next week’s prompt: Eyes

For the full list of prompts, check out my Through The Lens Thursday page. If you’d like to join Greta and I, but not necessarily blog your picture, join our Flickr group, where we upload our photos, and give comments, or helpful critique on each other’s photographs.

Happy 4th of July to my American friends! To celebrate the independence theme, I have a post at Everyday Family on how to teach preschoolers independence. Do check it out!

HA! I was actually thinking it didn’t look that messy! SO very true about motherhood. If they’re quiet, I’m happy.

It’s messy by my OCD standards, hah!

You aren’t kidding and will say that what passes for acceptable messes nowadays is just plain scary as pre-kids, I would have had a stroke just looking at. Crazy, but true and by the way, your mess looking fairly similar to ours here 😉

I think every photo I take of my kids could quality for this prompt. It’s a good one!
And I was never totally clean, but my standards have dropped even more..

Great light on these shots, you are right ‘mess’ is easy, but you seem to have very organised mess which is impressive! I don’t think our standards drop in motherhood. Clearing up a mess is much easier than getting young kids to entertain themselves, together and quietly.

Love those boys playing so beautifully.
They will grow up to be great friends one day.
Mine argue like crazy over sports and stuff,
but LOVE one another dearly, although they wouldn’t admit it!
Love to you, Alison Lee from MN. xxxxx

      Love you too! xo

The degrees of mess definitely change when one becomes a parent – what was once unacceptable is now not that bad. I have come to an understanding with the mess and the fact that things may never be 100% neat around here for a good long while.

Oh yes, I have braced myself for years of mess ahead 🙂

  • July 5, 2014 Andrea

Messes are perfectly acceptable as long as they keep children occupied. Wow, that made me sound like an old woman there for a minute. Wait.

Perfect lighting in that pic, adorable boys being industrious!

My boys love playing Zingo and I have to admit that it does drive me a little nuts when the tiles are everywhere! hehe. Yes, standards certainly do drop when you become a parent.

Yeah, what’s up with the tiles OUTSIDE of the dispenser?! Kids. 🙂

  • July 7, 2014 Katie

As I said to Greta, the hardest part of this week was deciding which mess to photograph. Heh. Also what is this Zingo? It looks like fun 🙂

Zingo is a kids version of Bingo! Using pictures instead of numbers. Really fun.

  • July 7, 2014 Rea

Can relate! With my severe impulse to clean up every mess right away, I’d say my standards dropped too. You have a very beautiful mess right there.

    • July 15, 2014 Alison

      Aw, thanks Rea.

Yay Zingo! Love that game. Sometimes I feel like the lovely sunlight in our playroom makes the mess not so bad. Oh yes, standards are lower.
