Through The Lens Thursday: Polka Dots

posted in: Photography, Through The Lens Thursday 14 comments

Through The Lens Thursday is a one-year photography project (now in its second year), where every week, my project partner, Greta of GFunkified and I, will post a picture (or pictures) we have taken based on a prompt. Our hope is that together, we can teach and learn from each other, stay accountable to our goal of improving our skills, and hopefully, be taking some gorgeous photographs.

A photography project

This week’s prompt is Polka Dots.

 TTLT - Polka dots

This is my life planner from Erin Condren, and I chose that quote for the cover for a reason.

I have always been a doubtful writer, in that I doubt myself a lot. So much so, my blog bio read, “I am a pretend writer.” My good friend, the very honest and gorgeous Arnebya called me out on that and demanded that I own the title Writer.

I am owning it this year. I have to believe in myself, my abilities, my writing.

So I have a post published on Medium today. It is a deeply personal story about my grandmother, a woman who is never far from my mind and heart. I would love if you head over there and read it. Thank you.

Next week’s prompt is Candy.

For the full list of prompts, check out my Through The Lens Thursday page. If you’d like to join Greta and I, but not necessarily blog your picture, join our Flickr group, where we upload our photos, and give comments, or helpful critique on each other’s photographs.

I have a picture in my house that says almost the exact same thing “Believe You Can And You’re Halfway There!” Cheers to that.
I also think of myself as an imposter writer but have NEVER thought that about you. Not even for a smidge of a second.

I was on my phone when I read this earlier, but glad I did come back to read your piece on the Medium as it was absolutely a beautiful and touching tribute to your grandmother. I have been in a funk for the last few days and know why, but trying to keep it together. Tuesday was the 5 year anniversary of the passing of my beloved grandmother and Valentine’s Day will be 16 years since we lost her husband (my grandfather). February always is so very hard for me and dredges up these losses all over again. So, I truly felt as though I was meant to read your words and made me feel just a bit less alone and helpless in my emotions from this past week. Alison, your grandmother sounded like an amazing and incredible woman and if I can say one thing, I would say that I think she would be very proud of you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this with us today.

I absolutely think you’re a writer; an engaging, sensitive, lovely writer who always puts her heart on her sleeve and thus makes herself even more vulnerable, which is only one of the reasons I find you captivating. True story: I actually spoke of you to my husband just the other day as “tthat writer, Alison, with the 4 kids”…Yeah, the first 4 kids will also be part of your title 🙂

Love it – and the quote is amazing. Very Yoda like, so of course you know it speaks to me.

I am thinking my photo shot for today is going to be one of the wreck I made of the house in desperation to find some Polka Dots!!! Seriously? two girls, several dozen Barbies and other dolls, and clothing and hair ribbons…. and I don’t have a single darn polka dot in this house.
    How can that possibly be?
I may be a little late to this challenge – there just has to be something around here.

The piece on your grandmother made me tear up. My grandma will be 101 in March and she’s fast fading. When she could, she would say those same words “I want to die.” I wish I had asked more questions about her life when she was able to talk.

I love your planner (and polka dots, personally) and am so glad that someone had you rethinking your definition of a writer. You most certainly are, Alison 🙂
