Through The Lens Thursday #35: Texture

posted in: Photography, Through The Lens Thursday 30 comments

Through The Lens Thursday is a one-year photography project, where every week, my project partner, Greta of GFunkified and I, will post a picture (or pictures) we have taken based on a prompt. Our hope is that together, we can teach and learn from each other, stay accountable to our goal of improving our skills, and hopefully, be taking some gorgeous photographs.

A photography project

This week’s prompt is ‘Texture’.

Texture - dinosaur

Texture - crochet

Texture - headphones

No stories this week about the pictures. I pulled random objects from around the house, put them on my white coffee table, and started shooting. They turned out pretty well, yes?

I am tired, my friends. Shall I count the ways?

Nearly 32 weeks pregnant but feeling much further along. Also, looking it. Everything hurts.

The kids are pushing buttons every morning this week. They’re kicking my ass, in other words. I have to remind myself that despite some not-so-stellar moments, I am a good mom.

I was considering closing comments here, because I understand that not everyone knows what to say about photos. And they get the least views and comments, so maybe people aren’t so interested in these posts? Now that I’m asking you these questions, I can’t really close comments, can I? I have enjoyed doing these weekly photography posts, because they make me take my camera out, and I do think I’ve improved. So it’s not really about page views or comments, but good lord, we know those are nice right?

Thank you to those who faithfully comment, week in, week out. I do appreciate you.

(What do you think of these ‘texture’ photos? This is a photography exercise, so any critique is appreciated and welcomed!)

Next week’s prompt: Golden

For the full list of prompts, check out my Through The Lens Thursday page. If you’d like to join Greta and I, but not necessarily blog your picture, join our Flickr group, where we upload our photos, and give comments, or helpful critique on each other’s photographs.

I would love for you to check out my latest post at Everyday Family on 5 quiet time preschooler activities! Thank you.

I am especially excited to be the first comment given the content of this post…! I like the dinosaur shot most, the color is awesome. I hope the boys ease up a bit and the twins too! You do have one thing going for you…great mom status!!

      And thank you, as always.

I know the feeling well and I am not even pregnant, Alison. Seriously, I am tired and a bit stressed myself. Emma starts kindergarten next week and we have orientation today. I am truly all over the place emotionally about this time and decided I will take off for the rest of the weekend and the weekend with posting right now and just take time to try to enjoy as much as I can – at least that is the plan, but sure I will get my butt kicked all over by the girls, because even the best laid intentions very often get mucked up, because being a mother and having young kids is just as unpredictable as it gets, I suppose. Hugs to you and thinking about you today.

Thank you for thinking of me. The love is felt!

I really like the closeup of that knitting! And sometimes I wish I had a white table for photography’s sake–all ours are really dark (which is why I invested in a piece of white foam board). Oy, and I’m feeling for ya lady on the pregnancy front. I remember how horribly uncomfortable I was the last few weeks, and there was only one baby. You’re almost there!

We are lucky we kept our very scuffed and old Ikea table ๐Ÿ™‚
Don’t tell – sometimes, I take pictures on my bed which has white sheets. Heh.
And yes, nearly there. Just 5+ weeks now!

  • August 28, 2014 Allie

    32 weeks – you’re getting close! You’ve already made it longer than I did – I think you’re a fantastic mom!

    • August 29, 2014 Alison

Yes, 5 weeks to full-term! How far did you make it with your twins?

It’s hard to rate photos, at least for me. People ask me sometimes but I struggle because in my head is 15 years of professional experience, and even that changes, and in my heart is something different.
So I focus a lot on how they make me feel, rather than technical stuff and composition stuff. So subjective.
    I’m so sorry everything hurts!

It is subjective. As an amateur, it’s even harder for me to critique other people’s photographs, and I come to that with my own preferences in mind, it’s impossible to shake.

I liked this prompt alot, it was fun. Getting up close to a dinosaur though, genius! I hope you were careful, those things have big teeth….

Heh. It was a teeny dinosaur, because my 2 year old, though he loves them, gets scared of the big ones, hah!
Yes, this one was a fun one, wasn’t it?

  • August 29, 2014 Natalie

I love the one with the dinosaur…texture is such an important element in life but we often forget about it. I bet you are tired my friend…hold on you are almost there!

Love the Dinosaur! Very cool texture.
Are you getting excited to have the babies? Can you imagine suddenly
having 4 instead of 2? WOW.
    Amazing! Surreal!

  • August 29, 2014 Andrea

I think these texture shots are very good. I really like the first two, together – the chunky knit and the smooth molded plastic compliment each other in a lot of ways. And what is the last one?

I enjoy the photo posts and seeing your response to the prompts. I love the dinosaur one – the framing and the texture. I do think that you’ve improved too! I’m sorry that everything hurts but 32 weeks!

I always want to read and see what you’re writing or showing. It doesn’t really matter if it’s photos or words – I just like hanging out in your space. I think also, maybe the fatigue and the discouragement of carrying so heavy (you are not very big and you’re carrying 2!) are colouring things? Maybe?

Was that a felt hat? You can see the little fibres! So cool!!

    PS Love you ๐Ÿ™‚

I do love seeing your weekly pictures – and can definitely see that they are more refined than at the beginning of the year. Awesome – don’t you just love getting better at something?
Also – 32 weeks with twins? That’s amazing in itself. Take care of yourself! xo

    I enjoy your photography series.
The dinosaur and the crochet piece are such diametric opposite surfaces that it really highlights various textures.

    Take it easy, Alison.
