Through The Lens Thursday #33: Lemon

posted in: Photography, Random, Through The Lens Thursday 28 comments

Through The Lens Thursday is a one-year photography project, where every week, my project partner, Greta of GFunkified and I, will post a picture (or pictures) we have taken based on a prompt. Our hope is that together, we can teach and learn from each other, stay accountable to our goal of improving our skills, and hopefully, be taking some gorgeous photographs.

A photography project This week’s prompt is ‘Lemon’.

Before I get into the photo for the week, I have to tell you that this is going to be a randomy type post. Because I’m posting this on my Friday when it’s supposed to be a weekly Thursday post. I am also posting an old photo which defeats the purpose of ‘improving my photography weekly’ (though I did take these pictures during a photography course last year). I will also be throwing in many thoughts that are running through my muddled mind right now.

Lemon - Curd Lemon - 1

You may be wondering how I happen to have photographs of lemons. If you know me sorta well, you will know I am obsessed with all things lemon (also, coconut, but that’s another post). I make lemon curd, lemon cupcakes, lemon bread, LEMON. So. During my photography course this time last year, one assignment was food photography. Hence, allthingslemon.

I was sick yesterday. At first, I panicked and thought it was pre-term labour, because isn’t that what you do, jump to the worse conclusion ever? I had aches and pains everywhere. I felt nauseated. I was running to the bathroom a lot. Being upright was not an option. I was sleeping a lot. I couldn’t eat anything but a bowl of soup at 6.00pm. Turns out, it was a mild case of food poisoning. The babies are still happy to stay inside, thank goodness. Because 30 weeks is still too soon (even though I look gigantic!). Hence, the late post and lack of new photos.

Robin Williams died on Monday. My social media feed was inundated with tributes, posts about depression and suicide, and some were filled with hate and vitriol, which is disgusting and disappointing. I decided to share posts about how you can help someone with depression instead, and watched countless videos of Robin Williams doing stand up, appearing as a talk show guest, and the many lovely tributes to the man he was. Down with the negativity. Let his family mourn in peace. Haters be gone.

I watched a podcast recently about growing your Facebook page organically. The expert posts up to 26 times a day on her page. TWENTY SIX times. I guess you a) need a blog about things everyone loves e.g. food, or kids-centred stuff instead of a generic personal blog (which mine is) and b) you have a team of people curating and creating content, then posting them on Facebook, round the clock. I don’t have a team. It’s just me. Question: if you already liked my Facebook page, would you unlike it or hide my posts if I post more than two to three times a day? Because I think I might annoy myself.

I haven’t been doing any blog evaluations at all (under Little Love Media), and that is intentional. Yes, I am slowly backing out of that side of my business, and focusing on book blog tours for self-published or first-time authors instead. I find it more interesting and rejuvenating.

I am now 4 weeks behind responding to comments, and returning blog visits. I am SO very sorry. I swear I’m going to try and catch up. Eventually.

Here, have a lemon.

(What do you think of these ‘lemon’ photos? This is a photography exercise, so any critique is appreciated and welcomed!)

Next week’s prompt: Green For the full list of prompts, check out my Through The Lens Thursday page. If you’d like to join Greta and I, but not necessarily blog your picture, join our Flickr group, where we upload our photos, and give comments, or helpful critique on each other’s photographs.

Trust me, I have backed away from some stuff lately, too and have felt like I was also falling behind and unlike you, I am not even pregnant. You definitely have pretty big excuse and seriously don’t be sorry, but still I do get it. And I like you I have always had an affinity for lemons and coconut, too! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Lemons and coconut – SERIOUSLY OMG.

I found myself watching some healthy person’s YouTube video about being healthy and as a random aside she was like “I love lemons, I always have them on hand, always!” So the next time I was at the grocery store, I couldn’t help buying some. I assumed they would magically make me healthy and luminescent. They are still in my fridge. They might look like limes now.

Maybe they’re making your fridge luminescent? LOL.

Aw! Poor girl, food poisoning is bad enough but while pregnant? With twins? That’s awful I’m glad you’re feeling better! That Facebook posting is nuts, I don’t have that much to say, I’m way too boring! Robin Williams…still can’t talk about it. Just sad.

You’re not boring! No one is.

Love the lemon shots. I couldn’t post to Facebook 26 times and would probably lose more followers than actually gain any – and who has the time? For real!

If you had a social media team like the Facebook expert does, then you could, heh.

Thanks Iva, and I hope you did get that lemonade!

Love how you captured the condensation on the side of the glass! I know that’s not the lemon part of it, but it looks awesome. So do the lemons – and I love all things lemon too. My birthday cake – that my mom still makes every year for me – is angel food cake with a lemon glaze icing. OMG shut up. seriously – it’s amazing. No photos because it never lasts long enough.
I was so disgusted by the reports that Williams daughter was run off her social media accounts by haters spewing their venom, that I wrote a blog post too. Shameful how little class and compassion some people have.
Don’t worry about replying to comments – you get around to such stuff when you can. I deleted about a month’s worth of blog reading from my feed and comments when I returned from vacation. There was no way I was ever going to catch up. And I didn’t even feel bad about it. ๐Ÿ™‚

The condensation was from the fact that I took the lemon curd out of the fridge to photograph! ๐Ÿ™‚
Yeah, the trolling and nastiness Zelda Williams experienced was just disgusting. Ugh.
I try not to feel bad when I skip reading and replying to comments, but it’s like an innate blogger’s guilt. ๐Ÿ™‚

I love lemons. Not as much as I love you. But I love lemons. Did you know that I eat them like apples – like just biting in and eating the rind and all?

Take it easy, Alison. I am so relieved it wasn’t preterm labor.
Love the lemons. We use lemons as a condiment for Indian food and it makes all the flavors come alive.

Aren’t they just magical, these lemons?

  • August 16, 2014 Tamara

Now let’s try this again – my computer ate your comment! Ate it.
Lemons. So soothing and amazing and versatile. They were something that helped me when I was pregnant and ill. I never got sick of lemons or apples. Really glad you are not ill or in labor. Food poisoning can actually be good news?? I learned that today.
Take it easy, my friend! You don’t have to respond. Just read. Take in the positivity. Like me posting to Facebook 26 times a day. (kidding!)

Yay, fellow lemon lover! I just love everything about them. EVERYTHING. To the point of obsession. Yellow has become a favorite color, in part because of my love of lemons. That’s weird right?

You’ve always been so good at balance. (Hush up, you ARE.) Take care of yourself and the twosome. Have some lemon bars. (Tell the twins Auntie Keely said to.)

Wow, gorgeous light on those lemons, they pop right off the page. Lovely. I hope you are feeling much better this week!
And 26 posts a day, is anyone really that interesting? Honestly, I defy a team to be that interesting!
    Happy belated Birthday!! x

I don’t know how anyone posts that many times, but it works for her! I think it only works for certain niches/ blogs/ websites. Not mine, I’m afraid!

  • August 20, 2014 Greta

Your lemon recipes always sound so good. And yes, if I was posting that much on FB, I’d totally annoy myself. I’d be annoyed with ANYONE posting that much. I don’t know how it works for her! That first shot is so detailed and pretty!

Mouth-watering lemons! I love lemonade. And those shots of lemons makes me want to drink some right now. Also, lemon bundt cake. I so wish you could make some and ship it to me. If only we were neighbors… ๐Ÿ˜‰
And sorry to hear about the food poisoning. You’re better now?
