I Am A Good Mother

posted in: Motherhood 55 comments

Lest you think I’ve gone and grown a big head, let me preface this post by directing you to this post written by Elaine at The Miss Elaine-ous Life. Too often, we are quick to tell ourselves how we suck as a mother. Sure, there are days when we DO suck, and we want to hit the rewind button. However, I think we do ourselves discredit by well, not taking credit.

Elaine wants to remind us that we ARE good moms. So yes, I am a good mom, and here is why.

I wake up REALLY early in the morning because they do, and I rarely complain. Yes, I need a cup of coffee before I feel human, but I am truly grateful I am able to be the first person they see every day (besides each other, that is).

I bought them an easel, and discovered that my oldest is quite an artist.

Easel drawing

I play cars with my 2 year old.

I did not freak out when they received these giant bears as gifts.

Giant bears

I bake them banana bread.

Good food

I take them out for cupcakes.

I help them with homework.

I read to them.

I let them play with play dough (and make a mess).

Play dough

I snuggle and cuddle them.

I kiss them goodbye when they head off to school, and before they sleep at night.

I take them out for walks.

I take them out for breakfast.

I love them, in all the ways a mother possibly can. Especially on the most trying days.

Now I want to know how YOU are a good mom. Elaine even has a hashtag! #IAmAGoodMom Tell me in the comments, write a post, tweet it, Instagram it. Let’s spread some positivity!

Aww, you are a wonderful mom and I admit even though I do so many of the above with my girls, too, I will not do Playdough anymore. We had one too many bad experiences here and even ended up writing about it for my inclusion in the Mother of All Meltdowns book. But still your post and pictures too totally made me smile πŸ™‚

They are! I nearly hyperventilated when I saw them (gift from their uncle). Thank you for the inspiration to write this post!

OMG those bears!! I do love this idea and you’re right that we’re so quick to downplay and put down all that we do. And I love the last picture of you and your boys.

I’m sure you are a good mom! And I just have to agree that we often feel bad about ourselves as moms coz we haven’t done this and that. But I guess we’ll be surprised to know how much we’ve done as well if we just look into it. This inspires me to write my own version! Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚

Those giant bears are really something! I’m sure they’re a hit.
I play cars with my toddler and let him use my leg as a steep hill.
I make Alton Brown’s pancakes in the morning.
I wake up really early sometimes, because of them, and I don’t even complain even though early morning is my least favorite time of day.

You are wonderful mother! The easel photograph of the boys is simply stunning. They really are mirrors of each other, aren’t they?

I think it can be really easy to think we’re constantly failing as mothers (well at least it is for me). I love the way you’ve spun this and shown all of the great things that you’re doing!

    those bears are HUGE.
I’m gonna need at least 6 of them. πŸ™‚

I will probably be the only one to say I am a good mom because I leave them alone. To learn. To explore. To discover. To make mistakes (gasp!). But that came from learning a hard lesson that I actually cannot be there, present, in All the Moments. To have All The Fun. Making all the Teachable Lessons. I found I was there too much: they couldn’t do anything without me. They wouldn’t play on their own, and if I was trying to talk to a friend: they literally would not let me speak because they so resented the loss of attention on them. not good.
So I tried to seek a better balance, and now: it’s so great seeing those wings grow, spread and fly! What a reward and a privilege to see them become their own person.

I know exactly what you mean! I believe in ‘benign neglect’ – leaving them to their own devices, because how else do they learn, experience, experiment, play? Imagination and creativity arise from boredom, I believe. πŸ™‚
