Through The Lens Thursday #25: Smooth

posted in: Photography, Through The Lens Thursday 38 comments

Through The Lens Thursday is a one-year photography project, where every week, my project partner, Greta of GFunkified and I, will post a picture (or pictures) we have taken based on a prompt. Our hope is that together, we can teach and learn from each other, stay accountable to our goal of improving our skills, and hopefully, be taking some gorgeous photographs.

A photography project

This week’s prompt is ‘Smooth’.

Smooth - Silk dress

1/50, f/4.0, ISO 400

Did you know that texture is incredibly hard to photograph when you’re an amateur like me?

Well, it is. I snapped approximately 25 shots of this dress, pictured below.

tbt silk dress

Hey, it’s #ThrowbackThursday time too! How apt (and clever of me). Circa 2008 with my then-coworkers at Nike.

For the record, it’s a short dress, above the knee.

I haven’t worn a short anything outside of the house since 2008.

Actually, I haven’t had such smooth hair either, since 2008.

What were you doing in 2008?

(What do you think of this ‘smooth’ photo? This is a photography exercise, so any critique is appreciated and welcomed!)

Next week’s prompt: Imperfect

For the full list of prompts, check out my Through The Lens Thursday page. If you’d like to join Greta and I, but not necessarily blog your picture, join our Flickr group, where we upload our photos, and give comments, or helpful critique on each other’s photographs.

I’m having such fun shopping for my twin babies, that I shared five favorite twin outfits I found, over at Everyday Family!

Love the photo, great use of light! And that is a lovely dress too!

Thank you, Stasha! I thought the light would bring the sheen of the silk to life. πŸ™‚

*trying this again because the internets are hungry for comments this morning

I love how you captured this word. It looks smooth and sensual.
You could rock anything. When I see old pictures of myself dressed up, I think “damn, that woman does not have a kid to run home to”

Sensual was what I was going for!
You know, I thought the same thing while looking through old pictures.

  • June 19, 2014 Allie

You look gorgeous in that photo and NO, I haven’t a clue how you shot that and got the “smooth” effect! In 2008? I was like you – pregnant with TWINS!!!!

It was a play on lighting!
Wow, that must seem like a lifetime ago for you. And yet, not really, right?

  • June 19, 2014 Janine Huldie

Absolutely beautiful dress and loved seeing you back in the day. In 2008, I was married for almost 2 years, not a mother yet, so I also had smooth hair and spotless clothes. Oh how all that changes when you do become a mom πŸ˜‰

Right? Now we are grateful just to wear somewhat clean clothes. πŸ™‚

What an awesome shot and gorgeous dress! I love that you went out of your photography comfort zone here.

    • June 23, 2014 Alison

Thank you, Greta! I really want to learn to shoot texture well, so there you go. πŸ™‚

  • June 19, 2014 Laura

In 2008, I was graduating from my undergrad degree (well, not really “Graduating”. I skipped that whole process. But I did FINISH it) and planning for my wedding.

Good job capturing the texture! I’m not sure what I would have chosen to photograph. That’s a hard prompt!

you did an incredible job with texture, the first picture is as smooth as I imagine the silk of that dress is.

I loved the dress, your hair, your smile. What a great picture. In 2008 I started the year as a new mom of twins, turned 38 and then went back to work. I was in a heady, happy daze of parenting (finally!). πŸ™‚

You just described my 2014! (mom of twins soon, and turning 38 even sooner!)

My hair is never smooth. Fizzy is a more apt descriptor on most days. Thankfully it is short and a little product will glue it together or spike it nicely.
I actually bought a sundress that hits just above the knee for the first time in years. Usually I am all about the maxi dress, but I kinda like the switch this summer.

    • June 23, 2014 Alison

Well, you know that I want to see a picture of you in the dress!

  • June 19, 2014 Janice

Back in 2008, my hair was smooth too. Now I know the meaning of frizz and I hate it!

  • June 20, 2014 Tamara

I wore short dresses last summer. You know what happened, right? Scarlet pulled it up to see my underwear when I was talking to her friend’s cute dad.
Awesome. I did some damage control, luckily.

  • June 20, 2014 Rorybore

you are not not kidding about photographing texture!! I am failing at this one. Everything turns out more “flat” – than Smooth. But I think you did pretty good. I like the shine of the fabric and the wrinkles add some visual interest – even it means it’s not perfectly smooth.

And I have no memory of 2008. I think I may have been pregnant… or just had baby #2. it’s all a blur really. definitely not smooth sailing. HA

What was I doing in 2008? I know it was our first year in Canada and I think I need to write a blog post about it πŸ˜€

Loved the way you photographed the silk. You captured the depth and texture of the fabric.
The dress rocks, too. Hip and classy all at once.

Thank you, Elaine! I miss my hair.

  • June 21, 2014 Dana

I think you captured it wonderfully. It looks like it would be so easy, but I’m sure photography black fabric is challenging. In 2008? I had a 5th and a 2nd grader and just retired the yoga pants to start a very part time job.
