Through The Lens Thursday #20: Empty

posted in: Photography, Through The Lens Thursday 48 comments

Through The Lens Thursday is a one-year photography project, where every week, my project partner, Greta of GFunkified and I, will post a picture (or pictures) we have taken based on a prompt. Our hope is that together, we can teach and learn from each other, stay accountable to our goal of improving our skills, and hopefully, be taking some gorgeous photographs.

A photography project

This week’s prompt is “Empty”.

Empty page

1/40, f/2.0, ISO 200

When one has children who is home from school because said school is closed for the week (thank you Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease), this is what happens to one’s writing.

A big fat nothing, that’s what.

Since I haven’t been writing, I hope you have. If I haven’t been to your blog in a while (I’m so sorry, I’m busy cleaning up crumbs and putting furniture back where they belong), please leave me a link to a blog post, or a friend’s blog (if you want to share some awesome writing) in the comments, and I promise to go read it! (that’s what naptime is for)

(What do you think of the ’empty’ photo? This is a photography exercise, so any critique is appreciated and welcomed!)

Next week’s prompt: Street

For the full list of prompts, check out my Through The Lens Thursday page. If you’d like to join Greta and I, but not necessarily blog your picture, join our Flickr group, where we upload our photos, and give comments, or helpful critique on each other’s photographs.

Since the weather is warming up, there’s no better to cool it down with a delicious, healthy and easy-to-make fruit yogurt popsicle! Check out my recipe on Everyday Family.

This photo reminds me of whenever I had to write a paper for school. I would sit and stare at the blank page waiting for words to start appearing on the Word doc. That never did happen…I really do like this photo those. Love the overall composition and my eyes are drawn to the monitor. I really have to get into joining these photo prompts, I feel like they’d help me improve my own photography tremendously.

I am face palming — wish I had thought of this genius idea for the prompt!
I had such hard time trying to fill my camera with “empty!” ha.

I really like this shot. It’s a great answer to the prompt, as well as technically being a great shot.
But I do hope you’re not stuck on empty for too long. πŸ™‚

Your photo is perfect and captures how I myself have been feeling lately, too. Sometimes I can stare at a blank screen for hours, wondering when the words will come.

Take your time. Life is busy and you are being pulled in many different directions. Write when you can ~ I look forward to reading from you again! XOXO

  • May 17, 2014 julie gardner

I’m going to take a stab at analyzing an aspect of this picture which I think is beautiful:

I love that the screen is, indeed, empty of words; but the right side of the photograph gets lighter and slightly blurred as if you’re about to be struck by inspiration.

I imagine that’s what it’s like in our minds – when something that’s fuzzy suddenly becomes clear.

    Lovely shot.

    • May 19, 2014 Alison

      I like your analysis, Julie!

  • May 19, 2014 Christy

Great subject choice for Empty! I’ve been there- sometimes inspiration and/or time just isn’t on our side. I hate seeing that blank screen sometimes! This reminds me of how I’ve often been intimidated in an art class setting, staring at a blank piece of paper/canvas.
