Through The Lens Thursday #10: Hot

posted in: Photography, Through The Lens Thursday 34 comments

Through The Lens Thursday is a one-year photography project, where every week, my project partner, Greta of GFunkified and I, will post a picture (or pictures) we have taken based on a prompt. Our hope is that together, we can teach and learn from each other, stay accountable to our goal of improving our skills, and hopefully, be taking some gorgeous photographs.

A photography project

This week’s prompt is “Hot”.

Hot flames

Shot with a Canon EOS Rebel SL!
1/30, f/1.8, ISO 6400

I don’t have a story for this photo. Except it’s been a rough week with terrible weather (if you can call it that). The smog (or haze as we call it here) was so bad and unhealthy, we had to stay indoors. My plans to shoot outside, to shoot the hot weather, were thwarted.

I took this shot at night, with the lights off, and risked melting my camera by going in fairly close.

The things we do for art. And our blogs.

How was your week?

(What do you think of my ‘hot’ photo? This IS a photography exercise, so I would appreciate any critique!)

Next week’s prompt: Dark

For the full list of prompts, check out my Through The Lens Thursday page. If you’d like to join Greta and I, but not necessarily blog your picture, join our Flickr group, where we upload our photos, and give comments, or helpful critique on each other’s photographs.

cheers to you for not letting the haze hold you back from your prompt! this is a super cool shot. i love that it looks so “different” yet i knew exactly what it was before reading the post.

Thank you, Vanita! Stupid haze, sigh.

So sorry to hear about your haze, Alison. I hope you will be able to safely go outside soon, for your sake and your camera’s sake. I actually thought of doing the same thing because the oven flame is the only thing hot around here – except for my husband but he’s too modest to be the subject of my prompt.

I considered photographing my husband too, but that would be er, cheesy. :)

Ohhhh, that really is an effective photo. It really looks so hot. Great job! Funny you mention melting your camera, I had the opposite problem here yesterday as I got snow on my lens when I wasn’t watching what I was doing!

This photo makes it clear why kids have to be reminded not to touch the range! You made it so beautiful. I might try to reach out and touch it, too.

Now that is “hot” photo! Get it, get it! Okay, seriously, I love the take on the prompt “hot.” I hope the haze lifts up soon and you’re able to head out. I haven’t been taking much pictures of outside because of the cold.

It’s a little better now, but nowhere near healthy levels. And thank you!

That’s a great photograph – especially since the fire looks white, almost innocent. I can’t wait for heat.. lol the cold is driving me bonkers. Have a great one Alison! -Iva

Haze and smog! I guess it is a trade-off with our frigid cold (but fresh) air.
I love your take. I would even think of that. And ours aren’t nearly as pretty.

I used my stove for “hot” too…but don’t worry, I also took a picture of Cortney. I should post that in the Flickr group too just for giggles.

I like how your photo is so dark other than the flames. I like that a lot.

Your photo was great, Katie! Please, do post your Cort photo. :)
And thank you. I turned off the lights for this photo, I thought the effect would be more dramatic that way.

This photo trips me out! Well worth the risk of a meltdown. I’m excited for next week though, “dark” sounds like a bit of a challenge.

    I really like this one!
It’s a great shot – everything comes together very nice. The composition, the lighting (or absence of also), how it’s both blurry and sharp where it needs to be. It’s rather abstract, but you can tell what the subject is still. very nice job!

Sorry about the haze keeping you inside. We’ve been spending a lot of time indoors too – we’re hibernating, I think. I am looking forward to spring.
