Old School Blogging: The Fridge Edition aka ACK!

posted in: Link Up, Old School Blogging 90 comments

What is it about revealing the contents of one’s refrigerator that makes one apprehensive? I’m happy to show you what’s in my purse, or share semi-unflattering photos of me as a child, or when hugely pregnant.

But what’s in my fridge? It feels brave. However, I’m doing it for my friend Elaine. She wanted to see what’s on your fridge for Old School Blogging this month, and since the outside of my fridge is just magnet hell, I had to dive inside. Literally.

Fridge door

What’s on there you ask? Magnets? WHAT MAGNETS? (I think there are actually more. Under the fridge. Ahem) We have coupons for our favorite pizza takeout place (Pizza Fridays, holla), a handy baking conversion magnet in the shape of a cupcake (of course), a vaccination chart, and a photo of my husband and I, pre-kids. I don’t know why it’s there but I looked skinny and I like that dress.

Uninteresting.

So here it is, what’s in my fridge.

Inside fridge

 1. Lemon yogurt – a new find. So. In. Love.

2. Homemade hummus – my mother-in-law made this. Yum.

3. Toddler snacks. A must.

4. Homemade lemon curd in a bowl – a yummy addition to the lemon poppyseed muffins I made yesterday. Of course it negates (or balances?) the fact that the muffins are actually low-fat.

5. Chocolate. What?

6. Two opened jars of sun-dried tomatoes. Why? Because when you don’t clean your fridge out regularly, you don’t realize you already have an opened jar of something, and you open another. Then you find the first one, and feel the need to put in them up front and center, so you DO NOT FORGET AGAIN.

7. Yeast! For all the bread I haven’t been making.

8. More chocolate. What?

9. Zyrtec – for the boy’s allergies.

10. Baking chocolate squares – for the chocolate cake I’ve been planning to make for weeks.

As for the rest: an assortment of condiments, drinks, jars of pasta sauce, pesto, jam, sugar, flour, leftover rice, vegetables, more yogurt.

Thank goodness I cleaned the fridge last week.

Who wants to play? If you do, link up with Elaine and Katie (her co-host from Sluiter Nation) now, linky closes end of the week! Tweet with @elainea and @ksluiter, using this hashtag #OSBlog.

Just for fun, I’m tagging Adrienne, Natalie, Tamara, and Tinne.

Have you entered my birthday bonanza giveaway yet? Great prizes from Scary Mommy, Simply Om, Bright Eyes, MakeMine Body Care and Alma Boheme!

I love all the chocolate :) And homemade lemon curd! I think I need to try that. It’s so fascinating to see the inside of other people’s fridges! In the same way that it’s so interesting to walk past neighbors’ houses repeatedly and then finally get the chance to see the interior :)

I’m so glad you showed us the inside. I find it interesting that you keep all your chocolate in there. Mine goes in the pantry. And I WANT that homemade hummus. I be it’s delicious!!!

Chocolate! :-) My fridge has a lot of magnets too. The inside of your fridge is way cleaner then mine right now. I’ve been meaning to clean it out for the past 3 days.

I cleaned it last week because there was a spill. Ahem. :)

At first I was like, “what’s in your fridge? How is that exciting?” But it WAS in a weird voyeuristic way. I guess I’ve never been too ashamed at the contents of my fridge — should I be? But I loved reading all about what was in yours in the same way I like scoping out the contents of people’s shopping carts at the grocery store =)

PS I would definitely hang a skinny photo cute dress picture of myself up on the fridge!

  • August 14, 2013 Kerstin

No. 6? Ha! I’ve done the same thing with Jalapenos….
Let me know when you start baking bread, that’s something I’ve been wanting to try for a while. We used to have a breadmaker in Germany we used all the time, but I’m reluctant to buy one here because they don’t sell the handy pre-mixed-just-add-water breaddough here (I know it defeats the purpose, but it was so good….).

I have been baking bread for a while now, started before #2 was born. I just haven’t done it as much this year, because baking bread takes a lot of time, with the proofing. It’s really easy, you don’t need any bread mix. Bread is just flour, yeast, water, salt and sugar. The way it turns out is all in how you knead and the proofing. I have quite a few bread recipes on my Bread board on Pinterest. :)

I love your fridge by the way, we are getting a new one in the fall. Since we leave at the end of the week the whole thing is eerily empty.
And magnets… yeah… me too. But they keep my kids happy when I’m cooking dinner.

I haven’t heard anyone talk about their fridge in SO long. In my first ever fridge reveal on the blog about 2 years ago, it really did look like we didn’t eat proper food at home. I didn’t cook or bake much then, we didn’t even have eggs. It was an assortment of chocolate (of course) and various beverages – so embarrassing! Yet, I showed the world my fridge. So this time is a huge improvement!

  • August 14, 2013 Kim

We have letter magnets on our fridge, too! You know, we got a new fridge a few years ago and at that time I said “No more magnets!” I was feeling so protective of finish on the shiny white fridge door – I didn’t want any smudges or scratches. A few splashes and crashes later, and the magnets came back.
Also, now I think I must make some hummus. :)

This is actually rather non-cluttered compared to mine. What do you use the sun-dried tomatoes for? I don’t usually like them very much so it would have to be a good recipe.
Lady Jennie recently wrote…Honoring MothersMy Profile

    • August 19, 2013 Alison

I put the sun dried tomatoes in pasta! It’s a simple recipe: Boil pasta. Brown off some garlic in olive oil, remove from pan, put garlic oil aside. Brown chopped broccoli in the same pan, then toss sun dried tomatoes in with some 1/3 cup of water from the pasta (that should be done by then). Lastly, throw in some chopped black olives, then toss in the cooked pasta and garlic oil. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot with optional parmesan.

Chocolate is a must. I have lots of milk in mine: soy, almond, dairy, that Yakult stuff that my husband likes. We have the same berry juice brand, I see. I’ll join this if I have time to organize my fridge, haha! I love this kind of stuff!

  • August 15, 2013 Michelle

I’m not always the best about cleaning out the fridge. Inevitably when I do it, I find 3 containers of sour cream and 2 opened jars of the same kind of salsa (because I am a creature of habit when it comes to salsa). Our fridge in the kitchen you can’t put magnets on which is a good thing, because we have another one in the pantry which is completely covered with junk! Some of it has been there years. I need to clean it off!

I’ve loved looking at this month’s Old School Blogging posts! (Unfortunately, I haven’t had time to participate this month…maybe in September?) I’m totally jealous of your chocolate stash…though there’s a reason chocolate doesn’t last around our house! And, is it a universal rule that all parents must have the same primary color letter magnets on their fridge? (We have two sets…yes two)

Your fridge looks amazingly empty. If you opened ours you’d see a shelf entirely devoted to the kid’s lunches and snacks for school (who has time to make them each night…I make them all on Sunday and give up a shelf for the week).
