Goodbye Google Reader, Hello A Bunch Of Awesome Alternatives!

posted in: Blogging 70 comments

You will know by now that Google Reader bids adieu on Monday, July 1.

This means, if you subscribe to my blog via RSS and use Google Reader to ‘receive’ this feed, then you will need to move your subscription to another reader. That is, if you wish to continue to read my blog, and I sure hope you do.

There are several options alternate out there. First, I’ll like to point you towards BlogLovin’, which is a nifty site that emails you your daily blog subscriptions. You can also just head to the site to catch up on blog reading there, if that’s your preference. You can go in there and group your subscriptions just as you would with Google Reader. To follow Writing, Wishing, you can click on the button below, or in the sidebar.

Follow on Bloglovin

Next, is my preferred way to subscribe and read blogs, Feedly. I like it because it’s closer to the Google Reader experience, and it’s so pretty! You can also group the blogs you read any way you like, as you would in Reader. What I really love about Feedly is, you can share posts from there, without clicking out (although some bloggers may be horrified that I just recommended you share without clicking over to the post, thus affecting statistics, but that’s how I roll, just being straight with you!).

Feedly, an alternative to Google Reader

You can create a free account, and it’s an easy one-click to move all your Google Reader feeds over. For future new blog subscriptions, you can click ‘+Add Content’. Easy!

There are also a few more alternatives out there, but I won’t go into them as I haven’t had any personal experience with them.

If RSS subscription is not your thing, you can subscribe via email:

Enter your email address:Delivered by FeedBurner

Or like my Facebook page for post updates and other shenanigans:

Or follow me on Twitter:

Or on Pinterest:

See you everywhere, okay?

If you’re a blogger and you’re on BlogLovin’, let me know in the comments so I can add you there!

I think I follow you everywhere now. Except in real life. You’re way too far away to stalk.

Great info, Alison! I admit that I haven’t committed to a new reader yet. I resist change in most things – and apparently how I read blogs is no exception, I have set up Feedly and Bloglovin’ – but neither feel comfy yet. I’ll adapt, though – I always do. (Eventually.) πŸ™‚

You will adapt! I have both but I use Feedly more. Just more intuitive – for me.

ha! What Laura said – I do follow you everywhere but not real life. I’m here in rainy New England with the photos to prove it. I am on BlogLovin but I’m still not entirely sure what that means. All I know is that an account was made!

  • June 28, 2013 Nina

I love the “see you everywhere” because I usually do follow people everywhere. If it’s someone who doesn’t follow me I end up feeling like a total stalker.

This is all really helpful! I tend to go through “blog friends” list on Twitter and make my way through everyone’s newest posts. It’s probably not the most effective. I will consider one of your suggestions here. I had not used google reader. Can you believe it!?

::Sigh:: I should probably stop burying my head in the sand and write a post like this, but I just have so little energy for blogging these days. So, in the words of the great Scarlette O’Hara, “I can’t think about that now. I’ll think about that tomorrow.” And by tomorrow, I of course mean three months from now.

    Maybe four.

i remember absolutely freaking out (inside, of course) at the announcement that google reader was to be ‘no more’. i quickly signed up to bloglovin’ and feedly. it took awhile to get used to either but i find myself subconsciously reaching for feedly. it’s become my favorite and now i can’t even remember why i stuck with such a boring and buggy google reader for so long. =) so it’s a good thing i think. i’m glad you’ve made the transition easily too.

Hi Alison. I’ve been looking at all the alternatives out there – there’s so many! Who knew?! Haha!
I think it’s a bad call for Google, but oh well. They need more people on G+, I guess.

Anywho, I’m on Bloglovin’ too. But like you, I prefer Feedly. I just got the Feedly button! I thought they didn’t have one, but they do – over at Button Factory: http://www.feedly.com/factory.html. I love the different layout options and how it’s fast in loading the posts I want to read.

Finally, just like your other “fans,” I stalk you everywhere too. Let’s just say that I’m glad to see you wherever I go. πŸ˜‰
