Sounds

posted in: Life, List, Random 78 comments

It is never truly quiet, is it?

Sounds I love

The 1 year old’s laugh

The 3 year old’s laugh

The 1 year old’s quiet snoring

The 3 year old saying “Thank you very, very much”

The 3 year old saying, “Please”

Running water in the shower, especially when I’m in it

The rain

The gentle whir of the KitchenAid

The coffee machine when it’s turned on

The intro song for Sex and The City

Popcorn popping

The sizzle of hot oil and whatever is being cooked

The doorbell when I’m expecting a delivery

The turn of a page in a book

My husband agreeing with me

Frank Sinatra’s voice

English accents

Irish accents

Cuckoo clocks

Norah Jones’ voice

The intro music for Downton Abbey

Sounds I don’t love

Nails scratching on a chalkboard

Someone else’s child wailing (okay, any child wailing, including mine)

Bells on bicycles, especially when it’s right outside my door during nap time

Squeaky door handles

Honking cars

Drilling in the middle of the afternoon

The music from the ball popper

The refrigerator door opening and closing, over and over (that would be the 3 year old)

The doorbell when I’m not expecting deliveries and it happens to be nap time

Cymbals

The horrific crash my phone makes when it gets slammed onto the floor by the 1 year old

Techno music

Plates shattering on the ground

Loud motorcycle engines

People talking loudly in restaurants

Every single sound made in public restrooms

Slurpy sounds when people eat

Elevator music

David Beckham’s voice

Elmo’s laugh

What sounds do you love/ hate?

I shared two of my favorite recipes for toddlers at Everyday Family today (pretty yummy for Mom and Dad too) – baked chicken nuggets and parmesan cheese muffins, anyone?

AND, Memories Captured will be BACK on June 10! Stay tuned for more details on our sponsor(s)!

I love the sound of my son’s laughter. And his chatter. And his walking around. Even his little farts (he’s 20 months old). I have a love/dislike relationship with the sound of my husband’s snoring though.

“Every single sound made in public restrooms” – ha!

I’m with you on the sounds you hate. And I love reading about the sounds you love. Totally makes me feel like I’m in your environment.

One of my favourite sounds is the sound of the fan by my bed at night. It means everything else is quiet and my mothering day is over (but not my mothering night, alas) and I get to sleep.

I quite like the sound of the fan too (we always have one on in the room we’re in) – like white noise. πŸ™‚

  • May 27, 2013 Maureen

Oh Elmo’s laugh creeps me out! Another pet peeve of mine right next to the slurping sounds is the one where people chew with their mouth open. Gross.
    Love your list, Alison πŸ˜€

PS: Sex & The City intro? Girl, I love you even more now!

Now you made me miss Downton Abbey!! I can hear the music now… πŸ˜‰

I hate the sound of whining!!! But I love the sound of silence when I can get it.

I have been singing the DA song in my head all day!

Whining does my head in too. I didn’t include it because, well, too obvious. Heh.

  • May 27, 2013 Kathy Radigan

I love Frank Sinatra and Nora Jones too! And, of course the laughter of my kids. Got to agree with you on Elmo, though it’s been a while since I have heard him on a regular basis. Great list!

Why is it that everything is louder at naptime? Love your list of sounds you love – the rain, Sinatra and the mixer and the sizzle. Although, we have had so much rain lately that a little break would be nice. You know, just so I can appreciate the sound of it again. πŸ™‚

  • May 27, 2013 Christine

David Beckham’s voice, really? Hmmm, now I have to go listen to him speak. For me, I cannot stand whining – mine, the kids, other kids, other people. Whining drives me batty. And the humming of fluorescent lights.

    • May 30, 2013 Alison

Oh yes, that hum, I know it well! Not a fan.

  • May 27, 2013 Katie

Wait. David Beckham talks? Who knew? I thought he was just for looking at πŸ™‚ Hmmmm….Becks.

I love the sound of the 1 year old chattering to himself.

I hate the sound of boys screaming at each other.

    • May 30, 2013 Alison

The chattering is adorable! My 1 year old says ‘wash’ but without the ‘w, so it sounds like ‘osh’. Too cute.

I like the sound of British accent. And violin and piano in music. That actually might be my favorite. And my 11-month-old learning to talk. Least favorite sounds? Thuds on hardwood floors or carpet. That’s usually not good. A fingernail on hard canvas. (shudder) Screaming. Crying.

  • The sound of windscreen whipers… the drill at the dentist’s (actually any sound at the dentist, except for ‘that was it for this year’ is unspeakable agony).
The sound of crickets chirping on a warm summer night, the clanck of icecubes in a drink, the wind howling when I’m safely and warmely inside, my children’s gleefull screaming when they chase each other… those I love.

I’m with you on the sound of rain (no matter where I am) and my kids’ laughter (also my husband’s, because I consider it a feat to make him laugh heartily). I love Minnie Riperton’s voice and the way my son says “you are my favorite.” I love the sound of a Pepsi being opened, whether it’s a can or a bottle. I love the sound of my heels on the hardwood floors, the hum of the dryer, and the millions of motorcycles that run through the city on Memorial Day. I DETEST the sound of gum popping, anything scraping on a chalkboard, a record scratching, music by Kem, my own voice yelling, any child crying, my kids arguing, an animal or person in pain, the song Don’t Disturb This Groove by Surface, cars speeding down my street, vomit hitting a surface that is not the toilet or trash can, and my front door opening (it squeaks).
