The First Letter

posted in: Birthday, Monkey My Son, Motherhood 0 comments

Tomorrow, my son turns 2. I thought it would be apt to share the letter I wrote to him on his first birthday, before I had a blog. Only 2 people have read this – my husband and my sister.

December 29, 2010

Dearest Monkey,

You turn 1 today! And so begins, your annual letter from your Mama.

I love everything about you. I love how you smile at me when you wake up in the morning. I love how excited you seem to be with the new day, no matter how bad the night before was.

I love how you giggle when I say your name. I love how you smile with your eyes. I love how you make a face when you taste something new for the first time.

I love your chubby thighs. I love your perfect little fingers and imperfect toenails (all crooked and funny like). I love your soft brown hair. I love how your hair looks after your naps. I love your little belly.

I love your babbling. I love how you light up when you hear your favourite song, The Big Red Bus. I love how you take my finger and use it to point at things in your picture book. I love the way you tilt your head and look at me when you’re sitting in your high chair.

I love that you are so curious. I love that you smile for the camera without fail. I love that you laugh whenever I sing ‘Rock a Bye Baby’.

I love that you cuddle up to me when you’re sleeping. I love your excited laughs when we play. I love when you stretch your arm out to people in lifts and wave at them.

I love how you look so joyous when your father throws you in the air and catches you. I love that you make the people around you happy when they see you. I love that your grandparents are almost melting with their love for you.

I love that I have been there with you everyday in your first year and watched you grow and learn. I love that you make all my days full and meaningful and fun and joyous. I love being your Mama.

I love you.

Stay tuned tomorrow as we celebrate Monkey’s 2nd birthday!

This is so sweet, and so special. I hope he reads it when he’s 18 and a man, and realizes how lucky he is to have a mama that adores him so much.

  • I LOVE this post.

I LOVE that you write these, I do too in journals we keep for the babies.

I LOVE that you capture the big and small moments and milestones.

I LOVE the last line, “I love being your mama.”

    No more words neeeded.
