Kuala Lumpur, 1994

posted in: Humor, Memories 0 comments

The place: Some hotel in Kuala Lumpur

The year: 1994, just before I turned 18

The occasion: College graduation prom, 3 months before I left Malaysia for England for university.

The date: The ex-boyfriend (also first ever boyfriend). Newly broken up, but trying to remain civil. He was trying to get back together. I rolled my eyes a lot that night.

The dress: A blue number with a naughty slit on the side, with a cross back. Size – extra small. Oh the days of being young and skinny.

The shoes: Ugly. My good taste in footwear only occurred when I was 24.

The hair: Surprisingly, my current hairdo at age 35 is remarkably similar to this little number half a lifetime ago.

The eyebrows: Unplucked.

The makeup: Not very well done. I didn’t wear make up normally then. I still remember the lipstick. It was a deep pink, and it smelled of cherries.

The jewelry: A gold necklace which I don’t remember owning. I don’t wear gold anymore. A bracelet which I can’t recognize either.

The thing around my ankle: A friendship bracelet which fit around my ankle, which I did NOT have the good sense to remove before wearing those sheer tights.

The sheer tights: Why, oh why?

Linking up with lovelinks #32.

Where were you in 1994?

Pretty sure I had this dress in red, wore the same sheer black hose, and similar strappy sexy shoes. HOT! Not.

That would’ve been 1st semester of my sophomore year of college. Nothing remarkable happened. I pledged a sorority. Which I later un-joined because, as it turns out, I don’t like sororities. And I was dating a guy who looked like D.B. Sweeney from The Cutting Edge. Considering everyone’s always told me I looked like Moira Kelly, I thought that was pretty funny.

This reminds me that I didn’t have pictures when I was in secondary school. But it is a good thing that you have the old pictures, which could give you a lot of reasons to reminisce and remember the good times. Have never understood the friendship bracelet around the ankle…but the sheer black hose aren’t so bad. Remember the days of sheer WHITE hose? We all looked like off-duty nurses. Funny how the fashions change but the basic hair-do premise doesn’t…I’ve got the same hair non-do that I’ve had for literally decades. Hmm. Keeping the hair, just adding wrinkles.

    • November 25, 2011 Alison
