Have you ever met someone and thought, I want to be friends with her for life. That’s how I feel about Elena of Mommy Is In Timeout. She is funny, as evidenced by this post of her running away from home with a Snoopy bag in hand; she raps better than Vanilla Ice, she cooks awesome food like this yummy mini muffin egg cups recipe; she is a mother to two adorable boys who inherited her mad dancing skills; AND she’s the co-founder of the popular Vlog Talk with Jessica.
She’s simply awesomesauce. Read this and you’ll be nodding in agreement with me.
Take it away, Elena!
1. When and why did you start blogging?
I started blogging on January 2nd, 2011. I wish I could say I had this great story as to why I started. I just spent a lot of time online between twitter (yes, I was tweeting before blogging. I’m cutting edge like that) and reading blogs. I thought it might be fun to do one myself. I figured it might be good for my marriage too because I talk a LOT. Maybe if I didn’t shut up online, I would shut up a little bit more offline.
2. What do you love most about blogging?
I love the community. I have met some great friends through blogging. When I first started, I would see all these people talk about their online friends. I never thought I would find my own. I remember when my first blogging friend, Jessica, asked me for my phone number. I about fell over because I realized I now had actual friends online.
3. Who is your favorite blogger ever?
That’s a tough one. I read a lot of blogs and like them for different reasons. I can get lost in foodie and photo blogs. But, I would say that my friends blogs, the ones that I check every single day no matter what, are my favorite. I have a connection to them and that makes their posts even that much better to read.
4. Is there a post you regret publishing?
No, I don’t think so. I don’t blog anonymously and a lot of people that I know in real life read my blog. I also know that my students constantly Google me, for reasons I’ll never understand, and I fear them finding anything inappropriate about me online. So, I keep it pretty G-rated. Bambi is more racy than my blog ever will be. However, put me under an assumed name and I’m sure you would get some juice that I would later regret.
5. What do you love most about being a Mom?
The little things get me. A hug, when one of my boys grabs my hand, when they say “Mommy” – things like that. The little moments that just melt your heart are what I love most about being a Mom.
6. What’s your favorite time of the day?
That’s easy: 2:04 p.m. The moment the last class period bell rings. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy being a teacher. However, there’s this strange calm after the storm of the school day that sets in at that moment. It’s when I feel most relaxed.
7. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would go to Bora Bora and stay in an over-the-water hut. As long as they had a money-back guarantee if a water creature jumped in our room. We were supposed to do that for our honeymoon. Not stay in a room with jumping water creatures, but go to Bora Bora. However, we had 2 free airline tickets and the furthest we could get was Maui (I know, poor me). We always said we would treat ourselves someday to Bora Bora. We haven’t yet.
8. What could you eat every single day?
Breaking news: I like a lot of different foods. Could be the reason I’m sitting here in elastic pants answering these questions. I guess, since it’s fresh on my mind from Thanksgiving, mashed potatoes and gravy. Close second would be burritos (yes, plural) with a side of chips and salsa.
9. Favorite season and why.
Fall. I love seeing the leaves change colors, breezy sweatshirt weather and days at the cider mill.
10. One word to describe you.
Loyal. To a fault.
11. I love your cooking vlogs. Tell us what is your absolute favorite thing to cook and why.
Thank you! I love to hang out in the kitchen. My favorite dish to make is probably my seafood steam pot because it is so tasty and fun for a date night in.
12. Your love for Detroit is pretty legendary. Tell us what you love most about it.
That’s really cool that you noticed – I appreciate that. There are a lot of amazing things happening here. But what I love about it? This city just has a vibe. Especially right now. It’s the comeback kid. Detroit, and the state of Michigan for that matter, have a lot to offer. I love when I tweet something and people say Is that really in Detroit? Or Is that really in Michigan? Unfortunately, Detroit gets a bad rap in the media and you only see the negative. There’s a lot of good happening that isn’t recognized and I’m proud to promote that nationally, or in your case worldwide, through social media.
