London, 1998

posted in: Sisters, Wordful Wednesday 0 comments

This is my sister and I in 1998, in her flat in Camden Town, London.

Yes, she lived in Camden Town, how hip was she?

Yes, that is a poster of Brad Pitt (who looks like he’s kicking me in the head). He was with me from 1995 to 1998.

Yes, that is an ironing board behind us.

Yes, that is a paper cutout of people holding hands in the top right corner, stuck on a wall.

Yes, we are sitting in mismatched kitchen chairs.

Yes, we are in the kitchen, which was also the living room (and my ‘bedroom’).

Yes, that is my sister with her hair in braids.

Yes, she had an eyebrow ring.

Yes, she wore over-sized shirts in winter.

Yes, that is me, age 22.

Yes, I had a nose ring (though you can barely see it here).

Yes, I had a terrible haircut.

Yes, I bunked out at my sister’s tiny 2-bedroom flat with her flatmate for 6 months, from summer to winter, living out of my suitcase.

Yes, I worked as a waitress and bartender while looking for a real job.

Yes, it was the best and worst time of my life.

Linking up with Kiddothings Picnesday.

Where were you in 1998?

Yes, I am a bit jealous.

No, the nose ring came off a few months after this picture was taken – I had an interview with HSBC! (didn’t get the job)

Next thing you’ll tell me your sister doesn’t have that ironing board anymore…

Ah. The times they do change.
But somehow you look the same.

I left Brad behind in London when I came home to Malaysia – who knows? He might still be there in that flat!

I believe my sister did abandon her faithful ironing board, tsk tsk.

I look the same as I STILL have a bad haircut.

……in 1998 my husband and I were in San Diego and I was just promoted in a job I loved.

Our kids were single, but all dating the wonderful people who are now their spouses.

My husband was still active duty in the Armed Forces, although he was getting ready to retire two years later…..and 9/11 never happened.

Hah, that is so funny–I was in London, in Camden Town, in 1998! What a small world. I was studying abroad in my junior year at the University College of London and they placed us in Camden. I LOVED it! I used to see the guys from Oasis all the time–did you? Ah, and that market…thanks for the memory!

Wow, that IS a coincidence!! Where did you live in Camden Town? We were nearer Mornington Crescent station than Camden Station. I worked in a restaurant called Arizona, then in a bar called Gecko. Hey, we might have crossed paths!

My sister was doing her degree in Genetics in UCL!

I didn’t see the Oasis guys but I saw a few other celebrities, including Neneh Cherry! (remember her?)

      • October 26, 2011 Elana

Hah, Neneh Cherry. Good old “Buffalo Stance.” I lived in Ifor Evans hall, which was a good long walk or a bus ride from the Camden Town tube stop (if I’m remembering correctly). We probably did cross paths at some point. I was probably hungover and rushing to class. Those were the days…

The thing I most remember about 1998 besides it being my first full year out of college and re-entering a dysfunctional relationship with my dysfunctional college boyfriend, is a charity concert I went to in Roanoke, VA, featuring Dave Matthews and Bruce Honrnsby – two of my favorite artists at the time. (Bruce still is, Dave not as much). It rained the whole time and our group was chilly and damp, but we had the BEST time. We all look so baby-faced in the pics. And happy. Fresh. Un-jaded.

And if you were with Brad Pitt from 1995-1998, then I do believe he was two-timing you with Gwyneth Paltrow. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. πŸ˜‰

You look nice! What terrible haircut?

I was killing myself studying for the bar. Such a waste.

    I KNOW I should’ve got a nose ring!

Fun! I love stories like that. My husband worked on a dude ranch. Seriously. I, on the other hand, went straight through school and into corporate work. Sigh. But you guys had the right idea.

How different were you??? Yet, look where you are now πŸ™‚

I bet you have a LOT of memories from that time. And I think you are adorable in that pic and I have no issue with your haircut.
In 1998 I was moving from the West Village to Park Slope, Brooklyn and planning my wedding.

1998 sounds like a wonderful year for you! I do have a lot of amazing memories, yes.

The eyebrow ring must have been compulsory when living in Camden. I love that area. In 1998 I was ten so not much happening there πŸ™‚

You are practically the next generation to me πŸ˜‰

That is such a fabulous life story. And reminds me, yet again, why I blame my parents for not giving me siblings.

      Siblings are occasionally overrated.

OMG I don’t want to look at myself in 1998! What a super cute haircut!

1998? Bogged down in PPD so badly I still don’t remember much except calling my husband at work telling him he needed to come home RIGHT NOW RIGHT NOW RIGHT NOW.

Also, the best worst time of my life.

    Actually, mostly the worst.

PS You and your sister are ADORABLE.

    • October 29, 2011 Alison

Ack, that does not sound like a good year – sorry!

I’ll tell my sister you said she’s adorable, I love making her cringe, haha!

  • October 31, 2011 Sweaty

Oh, a trip down memory lane… Seeing that picture reminded me why I always wished I had a sister! You two looked totally hip, channeling the ‘cool, young-and-restless look’ very well! πŸ™‚

Pictures like this are precious. They bring back so much emotions, don’t they?
