Writer’s Workshop: Dear Obsession – No, Not Mine

This week, it’s all about obsessions. First, it was mine and I vlogged it. Today, it’s about my son’s obsession,  for Mama Kat’s Pretty Much World Famous Writer’s Workshop this week.

Prompt #3 was:

Do you love it or hate it? An open letter to your child’s latest obsession.

You guys are pretty awesome. You come in 16 terrific colors with cute names like ‘Chocolate Chip’, ‘Turtle Green’ and ‘Kitten Gray’. You are the perfect size for my little toddler’s hands.

You enable the little guy to scribble and doodle to his heart’s content. I believe by bringing you into our lives, you are enriching his experience with color, drawing, art and creativity.

You can also draw thick or thin lines! And you come in a reusable pouch which is perfect for storing! You promise washable ink, formulated to “easily wash from skin and most children’s clothing”!

Except you don’t.

No, you don’t, Crayola Pip-Squeaks Skinnies.

You let me believe you were super washable, in fact, you claim to be the ‘World’s Most Washable’.

I call you bullshit on that.

I let my son go to bed today with green/ red/ blue/ purple hands and fingers today. Because of YOU, Crayola Pip-Squeak Skinnies.

I washed. I scrubbed. I rubbed. I rinsed. I used five different soaps. I scrubbed again. I might have scrubbed the skin on his baby hands raw and they’re still marker-stained, Crayola Pip-Squeaks Skinnies.

What. The. #*&$.

Also? My shirt. He accidentally ‘drew’ on my shirt and I was all, meh, it’d wash out.

No, no, it did not.

What. The. #*&$.

I’m tempted to throw you, all 16 of you cutesie-wootsy Pip-Squeaks, into the trash.

You are saved by this.

By my boy, his drawings and his love and obsession of you damn Skinnies.

Does your child have an obsession you love and/ or hate?

Hahaha – my one son’s face just lights right up when he sees a marker. I try to avoid it for as long as possible. He gets them at nursery – isn’t that enough? I have white walls… a lot of white walls.

Why do they love markers so? Why?

  • July 8, 2011 Bruna

I have the same problem over here with those same darn markers! They DON’T come off!!!

I know, right?? Totally misleading marketing!

ooh, I love the new look. So pretty!

I hate those markers too. They are horrid and don’t wash off anything. The worst I have seen is the Crayola Window Crayons. Don’t do it!

Thank you I love it too! I’ve been told, get Crayola Color Wonder. We’ll see!

Yikes, sorry about the marker mess. “World’s Most Washable” — compared to what, permanent Sharpies? Ugh.
Does your son like crayons? Much less mess there…

Crayons doesn’t do it for him LOL

Haha, we limit Lilah to crayons and markers that are REALLY difficult for little fingers to open without help. I will be sure to avoid “the world’s most washable” markers.

P.S. People here in Vancouver call markers “felts,” which I find very strange!

I tried doing it. All I got was the little one running over to me each time to ask me to take the covers off for him. LOL.

Felts seem appropriate – aside from the texture, I ‘felt’ great rage at them things!

Totally cute!! I remember when my 2 year old niece decided that coloring on the wall would be a good idea. Kinda like a shirt – right? Where do they come up with these ideas?!

Sigh. We have those same markers and they really don’t wash out well at all!! Fingers, clothes, walls…all of it. I think I should buy stock in Mr. Clean Magic Erasers.

I’ve been advised to instead obtain Color Wonder for the child. Have you tried those?

I’m desperate for these Mr Clean Magic Erasers – alas, none to be found in Malaysia.
