Am I Enough?

posted in: Attitude of Gratitude, Life, List of 10 0 comments

Do you wonder? If you’re ever enough? Smart enough, pretty enough, tall enough, thin enough, articulate enough, do enough, just be enough?

Your answer will be no.

Mine is. We are never truly happy with ourselves, are we? Constantly chasing something and not appreciating what we have, what we are, always thinking, not enough.

Elena, author of Ciao Mom, inspired by Alexandra of Good Day, Regular People, has started this really important linky – she encourages us to write a list of things we like about ourselves. The idea is to look for the positives, perpetuate them, and begin believing in them. It’s such an important message, so how could I not do this? Β Here goes:

  1. I like my eyes. They’re very dark, expressive and dare I say, pretty. Yes, I have pretty eyes.
  2. I am a good friend. I am fiercely loyal and I will go to the ends of the earth for my friends. I will fight to the death their honor. I will hold their hair when they throw up in the toilet (from excessive drinking or in the throes of pregnancy sickness). I will pick up their calls at 4.00am. I will tweet til the wee hours if they needed someone to talk to. I will bring cake when cake is needed.
  3. I like connecting people. If I find people who should meet, for personal or business reasons, I make sure they do.
  4. I bake really, really good cupcakes, cakes and cookies.
  5. I am efficient and organized. These two traits served me very well when I worked, and they have served me well in blogging. For that, I am so grateful.
  6. I have good taste in shoes. I have a rocking collection to prove it.
  7. I am a good wife and mother. I know it.
  8. I like my sense of style. I may not wear my awesome clothes much, but if I choose to, I clean up pretty well.
  9. I like my honesty. Β It has not always served me well in the past, but I know that at least, I’ve been true to myself. And for that, I have no regrets.
  10. I am an awesome travel companion. I am easygoing, fun, adventurous, flexible, organized, enthusiastic. You will want me for a travel buddy, you really do. Plus, I will make you laugh.

You know what? After writing that list? I really, really like who I am.

I am enough.

You should do this too, write what you like about yourself. We spend too much time beating ourselves up, let’s celebrate our awesomesauceness for once! Link up with Ciao Mom, it’s open til July 18.

Tell me , what is the one thing you like about yourself?

I didn’t do this link up but I have really enjoyed reading the posts associated with it. I like the stuff that makes you “you”. You should start posting pics of your shoe collection. I own 6 or 7 pairs of shoes. I’m fascinated by other people’s shoe fetishes. I have whiny feet so I don’t get very edgy with them.

This is a great post. I think we all struggle with this issue. If I had to pick one thing that I liked about myself, I would have to say I like that I am a grateful person. I really appreciate people who are good to me and I try not to take anything for granted. We are all a work in progress and some days are harder than others but hopefully we will all get there. Thank you for this post.

    • July 15, 2011 Alison

Keisha, thank you for reading! Yes you are right, we are works in progress, and eventually, we all get there. I am all about being grateful, I even do a weekly gratitude list on Sundays πŸ™‚

I like #7 a lot! So often we may question ourselves if we are doing our best at being a mom and a wife, do we give enough of ourselves, so I like it that you know you are a good wife and mother. We don’t give ourselves enough credit sometimes I think πŸ™‚

  • That is a beautiful list. And, it’s a wonderful reminder that we should think about the positives and not dwell on the things we think are lacking, because oftentimes, we aren’t lacking at all. =)

I love that you’re so confident in your role as wife and mother. My post for this link-up (on Monday, if it’s not too late) is about how I often *don’t* feel adequate as a mother… and some perspective I got from my own mom about that. As women, we are so hard on ourselves. About everything.

Speaking of which, I’m confused – is Elena’s link open THROUGH Monday or UNTIL Monday. I asked her on Twitter but didn’t get a response.
