When I started this Guest Star series, I had some bloggers in mind to ask if they minded showing up here and sharing their fabulousness. Truth be told, I was a little hesitant to ask certain bloggers. Only because I was worried they’d look at my little blog and go pffffttt, er, no thank you, your blog is tiny.
Today’s guest star? Is nothing like that.
In fact, I couldn’t have met a more gracious and generous person. Natalie from Mommy of a Monster and Twins
said yes immediately and enthusiastically. And I was all, YAY!
Hello? Over here! Yeah, she’s very pretty, it can be distracting. Did I hear someone say she looks a lot like Christa Miller? *Ahem*
So, not only is she a knockout, she’s super nice. And she’s a fabulous writer. She’s had articles syndicated at BlogHer, including this very popular one about bloggy guidelines (a must read!). She writes for Smart Mom Picks and Smart Mom Style. She has regular features on her blog including the hilarious The Bidness, featuring twins Lila and Mia; Mommy Monster Moments, where moms are invited to share their mommy monster moments (more below) and her popular Monster Likes, featuring favorite posts for the week (it’s an accomplishment, getting into this list!). Where does she find time to do it all? Let’s find out!
1. When did you start blogging?
I started blogging in March 2010.
I didn’t post everyday like I do now, but I also wasn’t sure if I’d keep it up since I’m kind of flakey and tend to start “projects” often and tire of them quickly.
2. What do you love most about blogging?
Not feeling so alone or like nobody else understands what I mean when I say I want to sell my children to gypsies.
When I first blogged about battling depression, I was actually shocked by the number of other people who felt the same way and experienced the same things. I wasn’t alone, and that is when I realized how important it is to share our experiences with others.
3. Who is your favorite blogger ever?
What a hard question to answer!! I have favorite bloggers depending on the subject – humor, creative writing, parenting, blogging tips, etc…
But if you want just one particular one, it would have to be Poppy from Funny or Snot. I started reading her soon after I started blogging because she’s hilarious. And I was the first person that she didn’t know in real life to comment on her blog. We have a special connection 🙂
4. Is there a post you regret publishing?
No. Not a one. I write for me, to share my knowledge with others, and to give my kids a way to really know who I am and what I’m passionate about.
There was one post I almosted posted, it was a fiction piece I wrote for the red dress club, that I was having a hard time deciding whether I should publish or not. I sent the piece to a couple of trusted friends, and while they didn’t tell me NOT to publish it, they thought that my blog wasn’t the right place for it. I decided against publishing it, and I know I made the right decision.
5. You have three beautiful children – what do you love most about being a Mom?
Teaching my children and watching them learn. It’s amazing to me!
And the hugs and kisses…I can never get enough of those!
6. What’s your favorite time of the day?
BEDTIME for the girls at 7:30 pm!
7. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Italy. If we ever win the lottery, I’d love to buy a little villa in Italy somewhere. I love the food, the wine, the culture, the language…everything about it. I will travel there someday, but until then, I just have to settle for dreaming about it.
8. What could you eat every single day?
9. Favorite season and why.
Summer. I love being outdoors all the time and how everybody seems to come out of hibernation to hang out, barbeque, and just enjoy being with friends and family.
10. One word to describe you.
Empathetic (probably to a fault)
11. You have a regular feature on your blog, the Monster Mommy Moment. Tell us a little about that, and share your Monster Mommy Moment.
Yes! Every Monday, I have a guest blogger (most of the time mommies, but I’ve had a few daddies, too!) share a parenting story with us. Some are funny stories, some are stories about losing their temper, some are about what they’ve learned the hard way about being a parent. But what they all have in common is that they are sharing an experience that others can relate to and learn from. It helps us to remember that no matter how we respond to a situation, we aren’t the only mom or dad in the entire world to ever respond that way. We’re learning and supporting each other.
The idea for MMM came about after my son pushed one of the twins down, which caused her to chip her 2 front teeth and almost bite through her tongue completely. I freaked out to say the least. I felt horrible about it, and knew that other people would probably be glad to hear that they weren’t the only ones that responded to their own children like I did with mine. It just helps us realize we’re not all alone in learning how to be a mom or dad, and that it is okay to make mistakes.
12. You are an inspirational blogger, with a loyal following, articles syndicated by BlogHer and writing for Smart Mom Picks and Smart Mom Style. Do you have any advice for us newbie bloggers who want to eventually get to where you are?
That is probably the sweetest compliment I’ve ever gotten…thank you!
My #1 piece of advice is don’t be afraid to ask other bloggers questions and for help. It’s the only way that you will learn from people who already know what they are doing! There are so many bloggers out there that have held my hand as I tried to figure out what the heck I was doing, and have helped me continually grow and understand about blogging and writing.
I have such a passion for writing that I think of blogging as who I am now instead of just something that I do, if that makes sense. I never knew that I loved to write until I started my blog. Now I have to write everyday to keep my sanity.
